Question:

On clear Tuesday night, you observe that there is no moon.  What phase would you expect to see outside on Wednesday night?

Answer:

Waxing Crescent

After a new moon (when you can't see any part of the illuminated side of the moon), you will be able to observe more and more of the illuminated side of the moon (it will WAX ON).  The light will come in first on the right, and it will begin as a sliver (a CRESCENT shape).  So, on Wednesday night (and the next few nights after that) you would observe a Waxing Crescent.
