Question:

How is the President of the U.S. elected?

Answer:

The President is elected through the electoral college.

The number of electors are chosen by each state based on population.  In most states the candidate that gets the most popular votes receives ALL of the electoral votes for that state.  A candidate must win 270 electoral votes to win the presidential election.
